Growing up, I attended Japanese school on Saturdays, pounding my head with countless Japanese “kanji” characters, practicing them over and over again until my hand felt close to paralyzed. But because I studied them for so many years, I can understand the meaning and origins of each.
I recently modeled & styled T-shirts for a new brand, Tokyo Typo Store, which re-examines and redefines meanings and origins of Japanese kanji characters, and conveys emotion and design through graphics and illustrations. Some of them will actually make you think about which kanji the illustration is trying to portray. Kanji can be fun, according to Tokyo Typo Store 🙂  Check out the rest of their designs!

Great photos! The idea of the whole project is amazing and fascinating. I would love to see project like this with other alphabets like cyrilic script, because it shows language in more artistic way 🙂

Love those shirts and the typo concept. I only know around 20 kanji, so no way I would be able to spot the typos, but it looks really cool:)

This is an amazing idea, and the design are very beautiful. My knowledge of kanji is really pitiful since I haven't re-opened my textbook for 3 years now, this makes me want to refresh my previous study!
