Like Rome, Florence was another beautiful city with its own historical and architectural flavor. My mother and I actually didn’t stay here a full two days, since we traveled from Rome the first day and traveled to Venice the next afternoon. I wish we had more time to explore the city, but I’m glad we at least made it to the major tourist destinations, all walking distance from our hotel.

Day 1 – Basilica di San Lorenzo and Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore

The Basilica di San Lorenzo was only a few minutes away from our hotel, and just from looking at the exterior, you wouldn’t imagine the beauty within. I’ve always been a fan of a mainly white interior, and this basilica really hit the spot. The perfect symmetry, the intricate detail, the beautiful artwork – I would have sat in the pew for a good hour just admiring everything if I had the luxury.

Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore

Like the Fountain of Trevi in Rome, this was another one of those instances where I turned the corner and BAM! The Cathedral di Santa Maria Fiore was like a dream standing majestically before me. My photos of the Cathedral do not do justice to it at all – this is truly a must-see at least once in your lifetime. My mother and I had not reserved anything for this, but as we made our way around the vicinity taking photos and the like, a tour group offered 2 discount tickets, explaining these would be the last two slots available for a guided tour up to the dome of the Cathedral. Since waiting in line didn’t seem like it would get us up to the dome anyways, we jumped on the opportunity for an amazing experience ahead.

The construction of the Cathedral began in 1296 and was completed in 1436. We climbed over 400 steps to get up to the dome, the highest point in all of Florence. While the view from the top was amazing beyond words, traveling up to and down from the dome was pretty claustrophobic. It was definitely worth it though. The tickets we purchased also included entry to the Museum of Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, which we went right after the Cathedral.

Day 2 – The Uffizi Gallery Museum

We only had the morning and part of the afternoon to spend before taking a 2 hour train to Venice on the second day, so we made sure to check out the famous Uffizi Gallery Museum. I read about it in an Italy travel magazine I bought in Japan, and I knew it was a must-see attraction while in Florence. These are street shots leading up to the Uffizi – the architecture and the pebbled paths really reminded me of Disney’s Pinocchio (I can’t believe I didn’t know it was a fairy tale based in Florence!).

The Uffizi Gallery Museum

The Museum was a gorgeous structure both inside and out, and while I would have loved to take more photos of the artwork, I figured better versions were already available in print or online so I decided to take a significantly fewer amount this time and enjoy it more. I was going through each exhibit in the Vatican Museums in Rome with camera in one hand for blog photos, iPhone in the other for Instagram story photos and it was, to put it simply, a bit ridiculous. I’m sure my mother thought so too. Anyways, the Uffizi was less confusing as you walk along a large hallway that follows the rectangular structure of the building, with entrances to the exhibits. It was crazy to finally see famous paintings and sculptures in person that I’d seen in books since I was a little girl!

My last post on my Italy travels will be about Venice and Milan! I hope you are enjoying them so far. If you haven’t read my travel post on Rome, check it out here.

Wow, I can’t believe you did all of this sightseeing in Florence in less than two days! Florence is a bit smaller than the other Italian cities, but you really managed your time well and saw the best sites. The Basilica di San Lorenzo is so beautiful and I love the white interior as well. It’s hard to really capture the beauty and intricacy of the architecture because they truly look so amazing in person and when you see it through the camera you’re like gosh that doesn’t do it justice. I’m glad you got to see most of Florence even though your trip was short. You will love Venice and Milan too! xoxo, Christine

One of my favourite things about Italy is how engrained the intricate art, and design brought on by Catholicism is. The gothic cathedrals are so eyewatering, and how haunting it is to look at artwork of angels or biblical moments. So amazing to see how one religion inspired so much and commissioned so much work!
