I’ve recently taken up studying for the TOEIC, or the Test of English for International Communication. A few weeks ago, I was asked to help translate a contract from English to Japanese for a famous Japanese artist. I thought it would be a fairly easy task, but boy, was I wrong. It took hours to fully translate 6 full pages of material. Even though I am a native English and Japanese speaker, this job made me realize how much I lack in my translation skills. So, I visited the bookstore near my work and picked up a TOEIC study book which includes business terms in both English and Japanese.
So far, I’ve been studying for a week, and I love it. First, I’ll go through a few pages of terms, and if I can’t read the kanji, I’ll underline those words and look them up in my electronic dictionary later. Once I do that, I make my flashcards (very tedious, I know, but it’s useful). I’ll pull out my flashcards during my commute to and from work, or if I have some time to kill.
I wasn’t originally planning to study for the test, but after buying this book and learning/reviewing terms for a week, I feel like I have a pretty good chance of passing the test.
Are you currently studying for an exam, or something you are passionate about? Do you have any studying tips or tricks? Let me know in the comments ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm studying all the time- it's crazy!! My only tips are to focus, focus, focus!! Eliminate any electronics and stay in a quiet and organized area. I can't even focus with music on. Good luck on your studies!! Good luck on the test!! ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

Great job for pushing your intellectual brain! As a college junior, I still suck at studying. But in general I study best and grasp information faster and longer if I do weekly quizzes. However, these are quizzes provided in classes and not quizzes I've made for myself. Still trying to work on developing my weekly quizzes!

the only studying tricks i can share with you is practice, practice , practice. It works for me, the more i keep doing the same thing over and over the easier it is for me. Good luck to you!!!

I am so impressed that you are doing this! No tests coming up here, but I am trying to get my husband to learn German– I am fluent in it and English and really want him to speak it as well!

Such a good move!! You can definitely supplement your income or even do translation full-time…especially if you enjoy it! Good luck, I'm sure you'll pass with flying colors.

Good luck with studying! I've been trying to studying Japanese on and off for years, but it's been really difficult for me to do it consistently. A few things I use are Anki, which is a flashcard program that's free on your computer (but kind of pricy for the iPhone). Another thing I use is lang-8.com. I use it to practice writing in Japanese and native Japanese speakers will correct it for me ^^;;

Right now, I'm studying from children's kanji books :X
